sadie illustration

I was hoping to get some feedback on this piece. For some time I did a number of illustrations around this character "Sadie" who was a delightful fashionista of a squirrel. This piece was done in watercolor and made as a card that was given out at Halloween. I dug it out of my portfolio today because I never received much commentary on the piece. Would really love some feedback regarding it... the good, bad, and all the in-between. Really, I am looking for some critiques here so don't be shy. Thank you for your help with this!

I would love to see Sadie with more vibrant colors and perhaps more cartoon-y. she is cute, and the concept is such a good idea!

Overall it is great. The only part that bothers me is her shoulders. Looks as if the chest part of the outfit is pushing her shoulders up, kind of like a shield might.

Thanks so much for all your comments. I agree that the shoulders have always seemed a bit problematic... too stiff. And I do really get caught up in the details with my work, which makes it hard to work in a cartoony style. My animals always seem to be more realistic.

I discovered you through "Inspire Me Thursday", and since you are soliciting comments... :)

First, I want to say I think you are *very* talented. I can just about feel Sadie's fuzzy tail in both piece you have up, and that is HARD. And Prismacolor/watercolor on Bristol board is not the easiest medium in the world. Kudos there!

I do think the Halloween/costume party Sadie illustration feels a bit hard edged, perhaps just a bit too outlined. I agree with the comment about her shoulders seeming pushed up. On the other hand, squirrels don't really have much of a neck area when they are sitting up! :) I *love* the bunny ears on the lady bug!

The outlining seems much more subtle in the second piece, at least without magnifying the picture. (On close up, it's harder than it looked small.) Overall, that one has a looser feel to it, but still quite realistic, which I like! :) There are a lot of cartoon animals out there, but not so many that are realistic yet whimsical/fantastic as well. I really *like* combination of pencil and watercolor for her.

Overall, really talented work. I may need to bookmark your site and keep checking in. :)
